Why Health Testing Matters for Breeding Cats
12 Jan 2025
Breeding cats is a serious responsibility that goes far beyond pairing two animals together. Ethical breeders are not only passionate about their chosen breed, but also deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of their cats—and the kittens they produce. One of the most important tools in responsible breeding is health testing.
Health testing allows breeders to identify genetic conditions, infectious diseases, and other medical issues that may not be obvious in outwardly healthy cats.
Skipping health testing may save time and money in the short term—but the consequences can be devastating. Breeding cats without testing can result in litters with preventable diseases, birth defects, or shortened lifespans. It also places emotional and financial burdens on kitten buyers who may not be prepared for the challenges of a chronically ill pet.
Responsible breeders use health testing not just as a tool—but as a standard. It demonstrates integrity, respect for the breed, and compassion for the cats and families involved.
